Workspaces & Projects

Learn about Workspaces & Projects in WaymakerOS.

WorkspacesProjects

Workspaces are the main organizing layer in Commander. Each workspace contains projects, and projects contain your tools — taskboards, documents, sheets, and everything else.

What is a workspace?

A workspace is a collection of related work. Think of it as a department, client, or business area.

Examples

  • Marketing workspace — projects for campaigns, content, SEO
  • Engineering workspace — projects for sprints, infrastructure, releases
  • Client: Acme Corp workspace — all deliverables for one client
  • Operations workspace — projects for hiring, finance, facilities

Creating a workspace

  1. In the Explorer module (Cmd+1), click Create Workspace
  2. Name your workspace
  3. Add an optional description
  4. The workspace appears in the Explorer sidebar

What is a project?

Projects live inside workspaces. Each project groups a set of tools that belong together.

Examples

  • Marketing workspace → Q1 Campaign project (taskboard, documents, dashboard)
  • Engineering workspace → Sprint 14 project (taskboard, sheets)
  • Operations workspace → Hiring 2026 project (forms, tables, documents)

Creating a project

  1. In the Explorer, expand your workspace
  2. Click + next to the workspace name
  3. Select New Project
  4. Name the project

Adding tools to a project

With a project open, click + to add:

  • Taskboard
  • Document
  • Sheet
  • Table
  • Form
  • Presentation
  • Dashboard

Each tool is created inside the project and appears in the Explorer tree.

The Explorer module

Press Cmd+1 to open the Explorer. It shows your workspace and project tree with all tools nested inside. This is the primary way to navigate your work.

Quick actions

Right-click any item in the Explorer for contextual actions:

  • Rename
  • Move to another project
  • Duplicate
  • Archive
  • Delete

Apps

Workspaces can also have apps — both internal apps built in Host and external links to third-party tools. Open Tools > Apps to:

  • Subscribe to apps built by other workspaces in your organisation
  • Open apps in Commander tabs or pop them out to full-screen windows
  • Add bookmarks to external tools like Canva, Figma, or HubSpot

Each workspace has its own set of app subscriptions and links, so you can tailor the app launcher to each team's needs.

See Apps in Your Workspace and Workspace Links for details.

The Tools module

Press Cmd+4 to open the Tools module. This shows all tools across all workspaces in a flat, filterable list. Use it when you want to:

  • See all your documents across every workspace
  • Find a specific sheet by name
  • Filter by status (active, draft, archived)
  • Filter by owner (mine, shared, all)

Workspace permissions

Workspace access is controlled by organisation membership. All organisation members can see workspaces they have access to. Project-level and tool-level permissions can further restrict who sees what.
