Creating Roles & Reporting Lines

Learn about Creating Roles & Reporting Lines in WaymakerOS.

CreatingReporting Lines

Build your org chart by creating roles and setting the reporting structure.

Creating a new role

  1. Open the People module (Cmd+2)
  2. Click Roles
  3. Click New Role
  4. Fill in the role details:
    • Name — the role title (e.g., "Product Manager")
    • Purpose — why this role exists in one or two sentences
    • Reports to — select the role this position reports to
  5. Click Create

The new role appears in the org chart under its reporting line.

Setting reporting lines

The "Reports to" field creates the hierarchy in your org chart. When you set "Senior Engineer" to report to "Head of Engineering", it appears as a child node under that role.

Top-level roles

The first role you create has no "Reports to" — it's the root of your org chart (typically the CEO or Founder). All other roles eventually chain up to this root.

Changing reporting lines

To reorganise your structure:

  1. Click on a role
  2. Change the Reports to field
  3. The org chart updates immediately

All roles under the moved role follow it to the new position in the hierarchy.

Writing role purpose

A good purpose statement answers: "Why does this role exist?"

Good examples

  • Head of Product: "Ensure we build the right product for the right market at the right time."
  • Customer Success Manager: "Ensure every customer achieves their desired outcomes and renews."
  • Content Lead: "Build a content engine that drives organic discovery and establishes thought leadership."

Purpose vs job description

The purpose is not a list of tasks — it's a statement of the outcome this role is accountable for. Keep it to one or two sentences.

Editing roles

Click any role in the org chart or list view to open it. You can update:

Deleting roles

To remove a role:

  1. Click the role
  2. Click Delete in the settings
  3. If the role has sub-roles, you'll be prompted to reassign their reporting line first

Deleting a role doesn't remove the assigned person from the organisation — it only removes the role definition.
