Example Conversation
You: Build a portfolio website for me. I'm a freelance brand designer
named Alex Chen based in Melbourne.
Agent: I'll use the Portfolio & Creative blueprint for this.
Do you have a hero image or project that represents your best work?
You: Yes — my rebrand for Coastal Coffee Co. That's my strongest piece.
Agent: What are your best projects? I'd like 6-12 for the work grid.
For each, I need: title, client name, and 1-3 images.
You: 1. Coastal Coffee Co. — full rebrand (logo, packaging, signage)
2. Lumen Studio — brand identity for a photography studio
3. The Good Baker — packaging design for artisan bread
4. FitTrack — app UI design for a fitness startup
5. Vino & Co. — wine label design
6. Spark Festival — event branding and marketing collateral
7. Mori Architects — brand identity for an architecture firm
8. Sunday Paper — editorial layout for an independent magazine
Agent: Do you have project categories for filtering?
You: Yes — Branding, Packaging, Digital, Editorial.
Agent: Tell me about yourself. Background, philosophy, approach.
You: I'm a brand designer with 8 years of experience. I focus on
craft-driven brands — food, lifestyle, and hospitality. My approach
is research-first: understand the audience, define the strategy,
then design from there. I've worked with 40+ brands across
Australia and NZ.
Agent: Notable clients, awards, or press?
You: Featured in Desktop Magazine and Communication Arts.
AGDA Design Awards finalist 2025.
Agent: What's the best way for potential clients to reach you?
You: Email: hello@alexchen.design
Instagram: @alexchendesign
Dribbble: dribbble.com/alexchen
I'm currently available for freelance projects.
Agent: Do you prefer a light or dark theme for your portfolio?
You: Dark — black background, white text.
Agent: Your portfolio is live at alex-chen.waymakerapp.com
It includes:
- Dark hero with your name and "Brand Designer" title
- 8-project masonry grid with category filters
- About section with bio, clients bar, and awards
- 4-step process (Research, Strategy, Design, Deliver)
- Contact with email, social links, and availability badge
You: The project grid looks great. Can you make the images larger
when I hover over them?
Agent: Done — added a subtle scale-up hover effect on the project cards.
Redeployed.
Design Approach
The blueprint prioritises the work over everything else:
- Colours: Minimal — black, white, and one accent. Dark mode preferred for visual work
- Typography: Modern and distinctive (display font for headings, clean sans-serif for body)
- Mood: Confident, minimal, visually-led — curated, not cluttered
- Layout: Grid-heavy for work, large images, generous whitespace, scroll-driven
Tips for Best Results
Your work grid is everything. Curate ruthlessly — 6-12 of your best projects. Quality beats quantity. Each project image should be high-resolution and well-composed.
Categories help with diverse portfolios. If you do branding, web, packaging, and editorial — let visitors filter. But if you specialise in one thing, skip the filters and let the grid flow.
Keep the bio short. 2-3 paragraphs max. Creatives are judged by their work, not their word count. Notable clients and awards speak louder than paragraphs.
Dark mode works for visual work. Photographers, designers, and visual artists benefit from dark backgrounds — the work pops. Light mode works better for writers and consultants.
Social links matter. Instagram, Dribbble, and Behance are where clients discover creatives. Make these prominent in the contact section.
