Writing good objectives
Objectives should be:
- Aspirational — describe an outcome worth striving for
- Clear — everyone understands what success looks like
- Time-bound — tied to a specific period
- Qualitative — objectives describe direction; key results provide the numbers
Examples of good objectives
- "Become the most trusted brand in our market"
- "Build a world-class customer support experience"
- "Launch our partner program and sign our first 10 partners"
- "Achieve profitability and sustainable unit economics"
Examples to avoid
- "Increase revenue by 20%" — this is a key result, not an objective
- "Do better" — too vague
- "Maintain current performance" — not aspirational
Goal levels explained
Strategic goals
Set by leadership. These define the organisation's direction for a period. Typically 3–5 strategic objectives per quarter.
Example: "Expand into the Australian market and establish a local presence"
Departmental goals
Owned by department leads. These translate strategic objectives into department-specific targets.
Example: "Marketing: Generate 500 qualified leads from Australian businesses"
Team goals
Owned by team leads. These break departmental goals into team-level action.
Example: "Content team: Publish 20 articles targeting Australian search terms"
Individual goals
Owned by individual contributors. These connect personal development and contribution to team objectives.
Example: "Write and publish 5 case studies featuring Australian customers"
