Waymaker taskboards offer five distinct views—Kanban, List, Gantt, Calendar, and Dashboard—each optimized for different activities. Mastering view switching helps you choose the right tool for the task at hand, making you significantly more productive.

This guide explains how to switch between views efficiently, when to use each view, and how to configure view preferences to match your workflow.

What You'll Learn

  • Location and use of the view switcher
  • Keyboard shortcuts for rapid view switching
  • When to use each view type
  • How view-specific filters persist or reset
  • Saving view preferences per board
  • Recommended view workflows for common scenarios

Prerequisites

  • A Waymaker taskboard with tasks
  • Basic familiarity with each view type (recommended to read individual view guides)

The View Switcher

  • Active View: Highlighted or distinct color to show current view
  • Icon-Based: Each view has recognizable icon (board grid, list, timeline, calendar, chart)

Alternative Access:

  • View Dropdown: Some layouts use a dropdown menu instead of buttons
  • Settings Menu: Views may be accessible via board settings menu

Switching Views

To change views:

Method 1: Click View Button

Filter Persistence

How Filters Work Across Views

View-Specific Filters: Some views have unique filter capabilities:

  • Kanban: Section-specific filters, swim lane toggle
  • Gantt: Timeline range, critical path toggle
  • Calendar: Day/week/month format
  • Dashboard: Time period for metrics

Shared Filters: Some filters apply across all views:

  • Assignee filter
  • Layer filter
  • Priority filter
  • Label filter
  • Search query

Filter Behavior When Switching

Filters Persist (default): When you switch views, active filters typically remain:

  1. Filter to "Assigned to Me" in List View
  2. Switch to Kanban View (K)
  3. Kanban still shows only your tasks

View-Specific Settings Reset: View-unique settings don't carry over:

  1. Enable "Show Critical Path" in Gantt View
  2. Switch to Kanban View
  3. Kanban doesn't have critical path (ignored)
  4. Return to Gantt View
  5. "Show Critical Path" setting remembered for Gantt

Clearing Filters:

  • Click Clear Filters button (clears shared filters)
  • Or press Escape to clear all filters
  • Filters clear across all views

Saved Filters

Per-View Saved Filters: You can save filters specific to each view:

Example - List View:

  • Sort by Due Date ascending
  • Filter to High Priority
  • Group by Assignee
  • Save as "Urgent Tasks List"

Example - Kanban View:

  • Filter to Current Sprint layer
  • Show swim lanes
  • Save as "Sprint Board"

Switching with Saved Filters:

  1. Apply saved filter in current view
  2. Switch to different view
  3. Saved filter's compatible settings apply
  4. View-specific settings ignored

View Preferences

Saving Per-Board Preferences

Each taskboard can remember your preferred view:

Default View:

  1. Access Board Settings
  2. Navigate to Preferences tab
  3. Set Default View (Kanban, List, Gantt, Calendar, Dashboard)
  4. Save settings
  5. Board opens in selected view by default

Last Used View: Alternatively, board can remember last view used:

  • Enable Remember Last View option
  • Board opens in whatever view you last used
  • Different per user (your preference doesn't affect teammates)

Personal vs Team Preferences

Personal Preferences (per user):

  • Default view
  • Column visibility (List View)
  • Sort order
  • Compact/expanded density
  • Color schemes

Team Preferences (board-wide):

  • Available views (can disable views team doesn't use)
  • Board name and description
  • Section names and workflow
  • Layer structure

Troubleshooting

View Not Loading

Issue: Clicking view switcher doesn't load view.

Solutions:

  • Refresh browser (Ctrl/Cmd + R)
  • Check internet connection
  • Verify you have permissions to view that view type
  • Try different browser
  • Clear browser cache

Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working

Issue: Pressing K, L, etc. doesn't switch views.

Solutions:

  • Ensure focus is on taskboard (not in a text input field)
  • Click on taskboard background first
  • Check if browser extensions are intercepting keys
  • Try clicking view buttons instead
  • Verify shortcuts in Help menu (?)

Filters Lost When Switching

Issue: Filters don't persist across view changes.

Solutions:

  • Use saved filters instead of temporary filters
  • Verify filter is shared filter type (assignee, layer, priority)
  • View-specific filters (like critical path) won't carry over
  • Re-apply filter if needed

View Preference Not Saving

Issue: Default view setting doesn't stick.

Solutions:

  • Ensure you clicked Save in board settings
  • Check browser cookies are enabled
  • Try clearing cache and setting again
  • Verify you have edit permissions on board
